Abstract
Fractures of the tibia are frepuently encounterd in modern civilized society. The treatment of the open fractures of the tivia remains a challenge for the orthopaedic surgeon. Factors that are unique to the tibial fractures in children are the
tibial
overgrowh and spontaneous changes in alignment with the growth of bone, manifested as either progressive angular deformity or correction of angular malunion. Thepurpose of this study was to determine the complicatins and outcome of such fractures
in
chidren.
Many modalities of the treatment of the open fracture of the tibia in children were introduced. Among them, dtabilization of the fracture was achieved with the above-the-knee cast whenever possible. Authors studied 18 cases of the open fracture
of
the
tibia treated at Sung Ae General Hospoital, from Dec. 1989 to Dec. 1991 and obtained following results:
1. Among 18 cases, 5-10 years old were most common and males were more commonly invovled.
2. The most common cause of injury was traffic accidents as 16 cases(89%). Among the open fracture, type II was the most common as 8 cases(44%) according to the classification by Gustilo.
3. The average of ateh overgrowth of the involved tibia was 0.7cm.
4. The average time tounion was 16 weeks.
